Kiir accepts Machar nominees, to form unified command today

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir Mayardit has accepted nominees of the SPLA-IO to the unified army command and other security bodies and is issuing a republic decree forming the peace army command this evening, two sources with direct knowledge have said.

Kiir and Machar signed an agreement last week agreeing on a contentious formula for allocation of positions of the unified security sector. The agreement provides on how to divide the positions in the SSPDF, police, national security, as well as other security bodies.

Last weekend, Machar submitted the list of his nominees to the president as provided for in the agreement and two senior presidency officials with direct knowledge are telling Sudans Post that President Kiir will likely form the unified army command today after accepting nominees of First Vice President Machar.

“This is to confirm that the nominees of the SPLA-IO given by First Vice President Dr. Riek to H.E President Salva Kiir have been accepted and the president will likely issue a decree for the formation of the unified army command,” one presidency official who requested not to be named said from Juba.

Another official who also requested not to be named said the president’s decree has already been written and will be taken to the state-own South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) anytime this afternoon.

“It is ready and it will be taken there today and we will be waiting for the names from there,” he said when asked to identify those nominated by both the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSBC) and the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO).
