Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir is calling on South Sudanese NBA players to join hands and boost the national team to ensure success in the World Cup.
According to the statement seen by The City Review and shared on its Facebook page, while receiving the World Cup trophy in his office in Juba, President Kiir directed players outside the country to join hands with the national team to ensure success.
“President Kiir also directed and invited all South Sudanese NBA players abroad to join the national team for the FIBA World Championship,” the statement read.
Kiir wished the national team luck and urged them to bring the trophy home.
“The president wished the national team good luck and urged them to take home the trophy as winners of the FIBA World Championship,” it added.
He appreciated the national team and encouraged them to continue with their fighting spirit, adding that the government would support them.
The Basketball Federation President, Luol Deng, applauded the government, particularly President Kiir, for his standing with the national team.
Luol said the federation would focus on strengthening the basketball sport to make it meet the standards of the world.
The South Sudan Basketball National Team is the first East African team to qualify for the FIBA World Cup and the top African team to qualify for the FIBA World Cup. The team will face China, Puerto Rico, and Serbia in the group stage.
The cup will be taken for public viewing at Nimra Talata Basketball Court on Tuesday, according to the officials.
The FIBA World Cup arrived in South Sudan as part of the cup tour in the countries whose teams have qualified to participate in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, which will be held from August 25 to September 10, 2023, in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
