Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir on Saturday met a Sudanese delegation of politicians and civil society who came to Juba to discuss the peace initiatives to end the conflict in Sudan.
In a statement released by the Presidential Press Unit, Presidential Advisor for Security Affairs, Tut Gatluak, said peace in Sudan should be achieved through dialogue and peaceful reconciliation, particularly with the support of the political forces.
Gatluak added that President Kiir was committed to ensuring peace returns to Sudan.
He said that South Sudan would seek the necessary approach to ensure that people in Sudan stop the conflict and embark on peace.
The Governor of the Darfur region, Minni Arko Minawi said the Sudanese people need long-term goals to find an amicable solution.
He stated that Sudanese leaders and the civil society would continue to persuade the top generals to embrace peace and come to the table for talks.
President Kiir reiterated his commitment to mediating the conflict in Sudan and renewed his call for warring parties to end the war in Sudan.
He said peace in Sudan would remain elusive until these leaders join the peace train, adding that peace is an important dividend for the two countries.
“As a guarantor, our shared historical values and common interests demand that we work for stability to ensure prosperity for our people,” Kiir said according to the statement obtained from the presidential press unit.
Clashes between forces loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have killed nearly 3,000 people since April 15. Another 2.2 million, according to the United Nations, have been forced from their homes inside the country with almost 645,000 fleeing across borders for safety.
In July, President Kiir declared neutrality in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, stressing the importance of jointly pushing for locally-initiated peace dialogues to restore law and order.
Kiir made the remarks to tens of thousands of supporters gathered at Wau stadium in Western Bahr el Ghazal State to celebrate his nomination as the country’s ruling party (SPLM) flag bearer for the general elections scheduled at the end of 2024.
“When they [foreign diplomats] come to me asking my opinion about the situation in Sudan and the role we are playing to help restore peace, I tell them not to take sides, but help them [warring parties] return on the right track, on the path of peace and stable because Sudan occupies a strategic position in the region and has a place in the international affairs. If you want peace and stability in Sudan, do not give weapons”, Kiir said.
