Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir Mayardit met on Monday with a visiting high-level delegation from the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to discuss the progress of the 2018 peace agreement.
The delegation, led by AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, met with senior government officials, including acting SPLM-IO chairperson Par Kuol and his deputy Losuba Wongo.
The talks focused on accelerating the peace process, promoting democratic governance, and strengthening regional security.
Presidential Affairs Minister Chol Mawut Ajongo highlighted the importance of the visit, saying it helped boost political and diplomatic engagement and provided firsthand insight into South Sudan’s current situation.
Chairperson Youssouf described the mission as one of solidarity with the people and government of South Sudan, reaffirming the AU’s support for peace and reconciliation.
He urged South Sudanese leaders to work together to complete the transitional roadmap and prepare for democratic elections.
“The visit by AU and IGAD demonstrates the strong commitment of regional and continental institutions to support South Sudan’s path toward peace, stability, and democracy,” the Office of the President said in a statement.
Youssouf also shared on social media that he had a productive meeting with President Kiir at the State House.
Other senior officials present at the meeting included Cabinet Affairs Minister Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth, and Foreign Minister Monday Simaya Kumba.
