Kiir, Machar take talks to Council of Ministers

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar are expected to come up with a final decision after a meeting of the council of ministers later today.

The duo failed to reach any conclusive agreement following a meeting that lasted almost over three hours at the president’s residence.

The meeting was adjourned ahead of this evening’s meeting of the Council of Ministers, where the matter will be deliberated further before a final decision is made, sources familiar with the matter told City Review.

“The meeting has ended, and they have entered the council of ministers meeting; after that, there will be official communication,” Puok Bualang, Press Secretary in the Office of the First Vice President, told City Review in a phone interview.

Machar had called a meeting with the president following last week’s sacking f Angelina Teny from the ministry of defence and veteran affairs.

In the Friday’s decree, President Kiir also swapped the ministry of defence, which was under SPLM-IO, according to the peace agreement, with that of the interior.

The interior ministry was, until Friday, under SPLM.

According to the agreement, the president cannot make changes to the cabinet (firing representatives of other peace parties) without consulting the other partners.

Machar, who has insisted that his “options are open,” wants the president to rescind his initial decision and reinstate Angeline.

He also wants the defence docket returned to SPLM-IO.
