Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Thursday night issued a decree and appointed James Pitia Morgan, the country’s ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union, as the new foreign minister.
Kiir in the decree readout on the state-own South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) dismissed acting foreign minister Deng Dau as deputy minister of foreign affairs.
He then appointed Morgan as the new foreign minister.
Dau was appointed in March and was previously the deputy foreign minister.
Morgan is a close ally of Kiir and hails from the Central Equatoria State’s Kajo-keji County.
He was South Sudan’s ambassador to Ethiopia, the representative to the AU and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
The appointment of Morgan is seen as a move by Kiir to consolidate his power and control over the foreign ministry.
The foreign ministry is a key post in South Sudan, as it is responsible for the country’s relations with the international community.
