Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir is expected to lead the Bright Stars basketball team to the FIBA World Cup in Asia, said Senior Presidential Advisor Gen. Kuol Manyang.

Speaking at the national basketball team’s reception at the John Garang Mausoleum last Friday, Manyang said sports can help promote the country as a tourism destination.

“Our president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, will be leading our national basketball team that qualified for the FIBA World Basketball Tournament to Japan in August this year, and myself will be there and do what I can do at my age in helping the team,” Manyang said.

“He (Kiir) will be there, and he will actually be the one to hold and raise the country’s flag as the team will be following him in Japan.”

Manyang urged South Sudan’s basketball fans to prepare to do everything they could in their various capacities to support the team during the competition in Japan in August 2023.

According to Manyang, President Kiir praised the team’s patriotic decision to represent South Sudan despite foregoing luxuries in Western countries.

He promised to stand by the team during their FIBA World Cup campaign in August 2023, urging the players to work hard in order to bring the FIBA World Basketball Cup home.

“If you win, believe me, the whole South Sudanese will have to come here to Juba to receive you, and we shall organize celebrations across the states and administrative areas,” he said.
