Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir has urged the United Nations to assist the country in developing a strong agricultural system to increase food production.
He stated that the country’s efforts to combat food insecurity must be intensified.
President Kiir made the call during a meeting in Juba on Tuesday with FAO Director-General, Qu Dongyu, President of the International Fund for Agriculture Development, Dr. Alvaro Lario, and WFP Executive Director, Cindy McCain.
According to the Minister of Agriculture Josephine Joseph Lagu, a UN delegation is in the country to analyse the country’s food security status as well as the situation of individuals fleeing the Sudanese conflict.
IFAD’s Dr. Alvaro Lario said that visit by his team will boost collaborative efforts to improve food production through new technology and new investments.
According to the Acting Foreign Minister, the government is creating a climate that allows the UN and other humanitarian organizations to freely travel across the nation.
The leaders said quick action and investment in resilience are required to avert a food crisis.
