Africa-PressSouth-Sudan. South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appealed to rebel groups active in the country to stop fighting the government and join the ongoing implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

The South Sudanese head of state, according to a statement by the presidency, made the remarks on Wednesday following the swearing in ceremony of Acting SPLM-Secretary General Peter Lam Both at the SPLM house in Juba.

“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit in his capacity as the Chairman of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Cde Peter Lam Both as the Acting Secretary-General of SPLM,” the presidency said in the statement.

According to the statement, President Salva Kiir urged, while addressing members of the ruling SPLM faction, “people who are still in possession of fire arms to put down their guns and join the peace process.

For his part, acting secretary general Peter Lam said he “will work towards restructuring all the SPLM organs in the states” and added that he will “also embark on the vision and mission of the party that aims at taking towns to the people in the rural areas.”
