Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir has called on citizens to reject tribal divisions and promote dialogue as a path to peace and national unity.
The president made the call yesterday while addressing participants at the national prayer breakfast held at the State House.
Kiir said the national prayer breakfast was organized to seek God’s guidance and blessings for the country during a time of continued challenges.
The event was attended by religious leaders, government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and representatives of civil society among others.
Addressing the gathering, the president appealed to South Sudanese from different religious backgrounds to actively support peace efforts in order to build a better country.
“Since we are here today to pray, our reflections will not be on politics but on the renewal of our hope and our shared responsibility to build a better South Sudan. It is this hope for a better country that I am calling upon South Sudanese from all religious backgrounds to be champions of peace.
“When we reflect on our long struggle, we recall that our independence was achieved through sacrifices, endurance, and prayers. We are called upon to revisit these practices and qualities as we work to overcome our challenges,” he said.
President Kiir also urged government officials to serve the public with integrity and accountability, stressing the need to reject tribalism and promote dialogue to strengthen national peace and reconciliation.
“In the spirit of those sacrifices, I urge those in positions of authority to serve with honesty, humility, and accountability in the pursuit of national peace. We can do this by rejecting division, tribalism, hatred, and revenge, and by embracing dialogue for justice and reconciliation,” he stated.
