Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The National Minister of Agriculture, Josephine Lagu, said the ongoing National Economic Conference will provide a crucial platform to discuss economic rebirth which she argued could be sought through a diversified economy.

Addressing the conference yesterday, Lagu said the country must rethink its revenue options and do away with overreliance on oil.

“The current over-reliance on oil revenue in South Sudan leaves our economy vulnerable to external shocks such as fluctuations in global oil prices,” Lagu said.

She added it was imperative to explore and invest in alternative sectors such as agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

The minister said these sectors have the potential to not only provide a stable source of income but also foster employment opportunities and reduce poverty, adding that inclusivity is another critical aspect that needs to be addressed.

Josephine said that economic growth must be inclusive, reaching all segments of our society and leaving no one behind.

“We must aim to bridge the economic gap between urban and rural areas, promote gender equality, and empower marginalized communities.”

She added, “It is essential that we prioritize sustainable development practices to preserve our natural resources for future generations.”

She also enphasised that partnerships be formed between the government and private sector, civil society organizations, and international stakeholders. She argued such collaboration and cooperation will be key to creating an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth.

This includes creating a conducive business environment, improving infrastructure, ensuring political stability, enhancing financial systems, and supporting local entrepreneurship.

The National Economic Conference on Towards a Diversified, Inclusive, and Sustainable Economic Growth in the Republic of South Sudan aims at building a resilient economy.

“By diversifying our economy, fostering inclusivity, and embracing sustainable practices, let us seize this moment and work towards realizing our vision of a prosperous future for the Republic of South Sudan,” she said.
