Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Lecturers at Rumbek University of Science and Technology have given the government a seven-day ultimatum to pay their five-month salaries or risk industrial action.

Kot Manyuon kuch, Acting Chairperson referral of Rumbek University of Science and Technology said they have decided to go on strike on Monday next week after the government failed to pay their five-month salary arrears.

Manyuon said the decision was reached following a staff meeting held on 2 February 2024.

“We academy staff of Rumbek University of Science and Technology conducted a meeting on 2 February 2024 and in the meeting, we resolved the following that the government should pay the different arrears five-month salary arrears for September, October, November and December 2023 and January 2024 plus air ticket allowances from 2019 to 2023,” said Manyuon.

He said University staff demand five months of unpaid arrears, as well as outstanding medical care and ticket arrears.

“We demand that the government should pay all these arrears within given seven days and failure to do this, we academy staff of Rumbek University of Science and Technology will have no other option the go for industrial action.”

He said the lecturers are facing difficulties in enrolling their children in schools.

“We are operating even without salary; we are operating from last year up to now without salary. We only received the salary for August 2023 in November but up to now, we have never received any other salary again, we have five months without salaries.”
