Let’s go home: Chagor tells Jonglei herders still in Equatoria

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The governor of Jonglei State, Denay Chagor, urged the Jonglei cattle herders who are currently in Equatoria to obey President Salva Kiir’s order and return their herds back home.

Chagor made the call on Friday after meeting his counterpart from the Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil, concerning the quest to stop the perennial conflicts between the cattle herders and farmers in Equatoria.

“We were both directed by His Excellency the President to ensure that the cattle go back to their original places in Jonglei State, we never expected that our cattle would have to be out of our state,” he said.

“The people of Jonglei State who are herding cattle that are in Eastern Equatoria and Central Equatoria, the time has come, the country has called all of us, and we are to take our cattle back to Jonglei,” he urged, adding that floods that had displaced the herders had subsided and his administration would deal with insecurity.

Chagor and Adil have appealed to the residents of Eastern Equatoria and Central Equatoria State to not obstruct the herders’ efforts to return their livestock to their homelands.

“I know that people are hurt. I know it is very painful, but revenge never solves any problem. “Forgiveness and love always solve everything,” Chagor stressed.

Adil reported that a significant number of cattle camps that had previously been in the south of Juba in the areas of Lobonok, Eastern Juba, Lokiliri, and Mangalla have been returned to Jonglei.

“There were people who wanted to come back at first, but I think he (Chagor) has also taken efforts to ensure they stayed, and we are on track for the relocation of the remaining cattle,” he said.#

Adil emphasized that the coexistence of the citizens of the two states was of utmost importance, and that they had decided with Chagor to cooperate in addressing future cases pertaining to cattle.

However, the two men came to an understanding after arguing at the Sixth Governor’s Forum held in Juba the previous year, when Chagor refuted the notion that the cattle herders creating issues in Central Equatoria State came exclusively from his State.
