Machar calls on peace guarantors to intervene, end ‘violation’ of the agreement

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. First Vice President Riek Machar is appealing to South Sudan’s peace guarantors to intervene in what the opposition has termed as a perennial violation of the agreement by some of the parties.

The latest shock to hit Machar’s camp is the removal of Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs Angelina Teny.

Angelina was sacked from her position last Friday in a presidential decree.

The opposition says, they were never consulted. Machar termed the move as “unilateral.”

“[This is] a new cycle of violating the revitalized agreement,” said Puok Both Baluang.

Baluong is the acting press secretary in the office of the First Vice President.

Chapter One of the revitalised peace agreement requires all parties to consult one another before a decision is taken.

According to the agreement, the defense docket was given to the South Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO).

Kiir also transferred the powerful defense docket to SPLM-IG, with the president giving IG interior ministry.

Minister of Interior Mahommod Solomon was also fired in the same decree. Th president didn’t immediately announce replacements.

Machar said the decisions to fire and reshuffle the two ministries, are not binding.

“The republican decree issued this evening by President Salva Kiir on the relieve of Hon. Angelina Teny and the switch of ministries of defense, veterans affairs, and interior is unilateral,” added Baluang.

“If there is any decision to replace her, it must be recommended by the leadership of the SPLM/A IO. We, therefore, urge the president to recall back his decision in respect of the agreement,” Balunag told Ey Radio.

Angelina’s last public appearance before she was fired was at Dr John Garang Mausoleum, where she attended the celebration of the feat of the national basketball team.

She was not allowed to address the crowd.

According to sources within SPLM-IO, signs of the impending changes were on the wall, especially after Angelina’s security was beefed up in the days leading to her sacking.
