Africa-Press – South-Sudan. First Vice President Riek Machar on Friday received a personal message and gift from Pope Francis.

The Pope’s message was delivered by Apostolic Nunciature in South Sudan, Ionut Paul ​​Strejac.

The gift was in the form of a book which is said to contain messages of peace and reconciliation, the FVP office said.

Machar later briefed the Pope’s representative on the status of the Revitalized Peace Agreement and the Roadmap signed by the parties signatory to the agreement.

​​​​Strejac​ ​commended the parties’ signatory to the agreement for the progress made particularly, the graduation of the necessary unified forces, and urged the government to double efforts to continue implementing the remaining tasks of the agreement.

​​​​Strejac​ ​revealed that Pope Francis will personally tour South Sudan in February 2023.

The Pope’s planned visit to Juba last July aborted on health grounds.

The Pope was meant to visit both South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo but was advised by his doctors against travelling

The Pope has been confined to a wheelchair after he fell sometime back.

Pope Francis is said to have already mentioned his planned visit to South Sudan at a meeting with World religious leaders in Kazakhstan on September 13, 2022.
