Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan’s First Vice President and leader of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) Dr. Riek Machar Teny has rewarded Susan Kenywo Gabriel, the wife of late SPLA-IO commander Gen. Martin Kenyi, appointing her as the Director for Procurement and Assets Management in the office of the First Vice President.
Gen. Martin Kenyi was killed during unclear circumstances during Machar’s flight through the Equatoria jungles to the Democratic Republic of Congo following the resurgence of war in July 2016 after a dogfight at the presidency in Juba involving his bodyguards and tens of thousands of South Sudan government forces at the presidency.
Several SPLM/SPLA (IO) defectors have questioned Machar’s silence on the demise of the top opposition commander who was an important asset for the group during the 2013-2016 conflict in the world’s youngest country.
In an appointment letter obtained by Sudans Post, Machar appointed Mrs. Susan as the Director of Procurement and Asset Management at the office of the First Vice President, with several opposition supporters welcoming the decision by the powerful opposition chief and the country’s second most powerful man.
In a statement to Sudans Post, Dut Majokdit, senior SPLM-IO member and close ally of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, welcomed the appointment, but said it was not a reward, but an appointment which she deserve by the virtue of her qualification.
“It is not a reward, not one is rewarded just for having a relative died a group. She was appointed because of her qualification and I can say that she deserve that. She is a South Sudanese who deserve that position by the virtue of her qualification,” the senior SPLM-IO official said.
