Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny who is also the leader of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has said that the country should change its name to ‘People’s Republic of Sudan.
Machar made this suggestion during the opening of the SPLM-IO General Secretariat in Juba on Saturday morning, saying ‘South’ in ‘South Sudan’ is just a direction and it was better that the country change its name to something he said would be ‘People’s Republic of Sudan.’
“The issue of our identity is a complex issue; even our country’s name I believe should be changed to something like People’s Republic of Sudan because ‘South’ is just a direction not a name,” Machar said.
“So we will debate it what is it that we want to call ourselves. I hope you will accept my People’s Republic of Sudan. IN Congo, for example, there is Democratic Republic of Congo and there is Republic of Congo, so there can be People’s Republic of Sudan and Republic of Sudan,” the top government official further added.
Machar also announced during his speech that the party has decided to change its logo and that it was also working to change its name, something he said will happen in the near future.
“This logo is a bird, a bird with a vision because we have a vision. We have a vision that our country must be a prosperous, peaceful, united country. This we must see that this is what we want to take South Sudan to, its people united,” he said.
“We shall change the name of our party when time comes,” he added.
