Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The chairman and commander-in-chief of the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A), Gen Paul Malong Awan approved the resignation of his spokesperson and the Secretary of ICT, Deng Chapath.
“I make reference to the letter of resignation submitted by you on January 23, 2022, resigning from the South Sudan United Front/Army; the post of Secretary of ICT; and Spokesman, respectively,” the statement read in part.
“After scrutinising the reasons set forth in the letter, I do hereby approve your resignation and consequently release you from all obligations under the South Sudan United Front/Army, effective on my signature. With sincere thanks and appreciation, I wish you success and all the best in your future endeavours.” Meanwhile, Malong appointed Akuch Thuch Mach as the Secretary of Education, Science, and Technology for SSUF/A.
“Cursed seat”
Chapath tendered his resignation letter on January 23, 2022, saying Malong’s leadership lacked guidance and described him (Malong) as “nepotistic” and “treating people with the utmost disrespect.”
“Dear Gen, Paul, please accept this letter as notice of resignation from the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) and as the official Spokesperson and Secretary of ICT. I tender this resignation as a way of expressing my dissatisfaction with your actions towards South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) officials,” Deng said.
“You treat people with the utmost disrespect. You are nepotistic (sic) in all your actions, and you offered little or no leadership and guidance from inception to this date. Through this resignation notice, I also convey my message to the public that I will brief them through different media platforms to share with them my discontentment and the way forward. “
Daniel Mach, who serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Training and Research at SSUF/A, said Chapath had resigned from a key position, adding that he (Chapath) had been bought by the government.
“This is significant news. Our spokesperson was bought again by the government. The position of spokesperson in SSUF/A is in jeopardy. No vacuum (left) actually, but it’s the target seat where the government buys people, ” he stated.
Deng Chapath replaced Chol Duang, who also resigned from the same position in July 2021, saying that he had a wider vision and services to offer to the nation.
“This is to inform my family, friends, colleagues, and the public that I have resigned as spokesperson and member of the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) under the leadership of Paul Malang Awan Anei,” said Duang.
“However, the time has come for me to do other things. I will still contribute towards nation-building and peace on different platforms, ” he added.
Rome talks
Malong rebelled in 2017 and formed the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A). He later decided to be part of the South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA), which holds Rome talks with the government in Rome.
After President Salva Kiir reactivated the Rome talks in November 2021, SSOMA demonstrated a willingness to resume talks with the government. The pledge was made at a workshop in Nairobi in mid-December 2021 when participants agreed to include Real SPLM and SSUF/A in Ceasefire Monitoring.
However, the National Salvation Front of Thomas Cirilo, which has always been blamed for attacks on civilians and highway ambushes, remains unwilling to take part in talks. SSUF/A said they were ready for talks once the commencement date was communicated.
