Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Ministry of General Education and Instruction has signed a three-year agreement worth more than $1.6 million with the World Food Programme (WFP) to support education and school feeding across South Sudan.
The memorandum of understanding was signed on Friday by the Under-Secretary of the Ministry, Kachuol Mabil Piok, and the WFP Country Director, Mary-Ellen McGroarty.
Speaking to SSBC during the signing ceremony, Under-Secretary Kachuol said the agreement comes at a critical time as the country faces serious funding gaps in the education sector.
“We are signing this MOU at a time when South Sudan is experiencing a difficult time, especially the economic crisis, and we have a lot of funding gaps, especially in the education sector.
“And a country without skilled manpower definitely cannot develop So it is our hope that we’ll be able to use these big resources to basically get the best out of this country Signing MOU is one thing, but delivering it is another,” Mabil said.
McGroarty said the funding will support homegrown school feeding initiatives and help lay the foundation for long-term sustainability.
“Today’s signing represents an investment in education and our commitment to invest in education and human capital that will drive South Sudan’s future and drive South Sudan’s prosperity. The allocation of £1.6 million from the Global Programmed for Education to support homegrown school feeding is the first step forward in sustainability and national ownership for the school meals programmed,” Ellen said.
The partnership is expected to support education and school feeding initiatives over the next three years as stakeholders work to improve access to learning for children across South Sudan.
