MoH inaugurates new Sub-National PHEOC in Wau

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The National Ministry of Health has inaugurated a new Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, to improve regional coordination and preparedness for public health emergencies.

The new PHEOC launched on April 3 was established with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and US Agency for International Development (USAID), according to the ministry’s statement.

Dr. Annin Ngot Ngot, Undersecretary of the National Ministry of Health, said the health unit is aimed to protect communities from health threats and enable responses to outbreaks and disasters.

Dr. Kediende Chong Mapuor, Director General of Preventive Health Services and Emergencies Response, emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders for the center’s success.

South Sudan is facing a worsening cholera outbreak which started in October 2024 and has since resulted in 0ver 40,000 confirmed cases and nearly 800 related deaths.

The country has also declared an mpox outbreak with seven confirmed cases and no death so far.
