Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The government of Western Equatoria State on Tuesday officially swore in newly appointed state officials during a ceremony at the State Secretariat in Yambio.
The officials were appointed under Republican Decrees issued by President Salva Kiir on July 31. The event, officiated by the judiciary, was led by Governor James Al Taib Berapai.
A total of six ministers, two county commissioners, two advisors, and the chairperson of the State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission took the oath of office. The appointments include:
Alison Barnaba – Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement
Moses Pius – Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment
Maria John – Minister of Parliamentary Affairs
Peter Gbudue – Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries
Emmanuel Kaku – Minister of Roads, Transport and Bridges
Charles Gamboripal – Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports
Grace Apollo Musa – Economic Advisor
Samuel Bati – Peace and Security Advisor
Michael Ismail – Commissioner of Yambio County
Jerome K. Kumbaniduwa – Chairperson, State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission
In remarks on behalf of the newly sworn-in officials, Barnaba said the group is committed to working together to promote peace and stability in the state.
“We are committed to working together for peace so that our people can live without fear or threats,” he said.
Governor Berapai urged the officials to prioritize service delivery, the rule of law, and the welfare of the citizens.
“This is not about titles but about service to our people,” Berapai said. “I call upon each of you to deliver quality services, respect the law, and put the interests of Western Equatoria above everything else.”
Michael Ismail, the newly appointed commissioner of Yambio County, pledged to promote unity and inclusivity.
“I joined the SPLA movement in 1990, and though I was left behind without promotion, I never lost faith,” he said. “When you believe in God, God will answer you.”
He also called on residents to embrace unity across tribal lines and committed to inclusive governance and community development.
The July 31 decree also appointed new members to the State Legislative Assembly. Ann Tuna Richard was named speaker, while Phillip Gbambi Samuel and Bage Biko James were also appointed.
