Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The non-signatory South Sudan Opposition Group (NSSOG) said they are still open to talks with the government after a similar meeting fell flat last time out.
A similar meeting held in March 2023 in Rome ended prematurely after the government and the holdout parties failed to agree on some of the items on the agenda.
The meeting was adjourned to May, but the two sides are yet to meet since.
In the collapsed talks, the group tabled fresh demands, including a call for fresh talks on the ongoing implementation of the roadmap, demands that the government said were not possible.
Juba, on the other hand, wants the talks to begin where they ended last year, insisting that the key agenda should be how to incorporate SSNOG into the security mechanisms.
Meanwhile, efforts by the Community of Sant Egidio broker have not borne fruit, even as the mull meets both parties separately to consult on the way forward.
On their return from Rome after a botched meeting, the NSSOG continued to hold their position for a roundtable discussion.
“The NSSOG remains committed to dialogue to achieve permanent and just peace in South Sudan, which will only be achieved through an inclusive Roundtable of all South Sudanese stakeholders,” Pa’gan Amum Okiech, NSSOG spokesperson, said in a statement.
He added that the group is still committed to the Rome Peace and ready to ensure that there is peace in South Sudan.
