The government of Jonglei State has strongly condemned a wave of violent attacks attributed to armed youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, which left dozens of civilians dead, several injured, and thousands of cattle looted across multiple counties between February and March 2026.
In a press statement issued on Monday, Nyamar Lony Thichot, state Ministry of Information, described the incidents as “barbaric” and a grave threat to peace and stability in the region.
The statement detailed a coordinated attack targeting communities in Akobo, Uror, Duk, Ayod, Bor, Nyirol, and Twic East counties.
According to the report, one of the most recent incidents occurred on March 27 in the Ugal and Nyikhan areas of Akobo County, where six people were killed, and an unspecified number of cattle were stolen.
She stated that on March 30, five civilians were killed and eight others wounded during an attack in Pieri Payam of Uror County, although authorities said the raided cattle were later recovered. The statement outlines a pattern of violence stretching back to early February.
“In Uror County alone, multiple attacks reportedly left at least 14 people dead, including women, while thousands of cattle were looted. In Duk County, seven people were killed, and more than 3,000 cattle were stolen in a single incident in early February,” said Nyamar.
Similarly, in Ayod County, an attack on March 1 between Ayod town and Pajiek left 12 people dead and 13 injured, with nearly 4,000 cattle taken.
In Bor County, armed youth reportedly raided thousands of cattle in Baidit and Mareng payams, killing and injuring civilians, including women.
Nyamar stated that seven children were abducted between Lankien and Yakuach, while a separate incident saw a woman and two children kidnapped and their relative killed in Nyirol County.
The Jonglei government said the attacks constitute serious human rights violations and undermine ongoing peace initiatives, including intercommunal dialogue efforts between Jonglei and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
Nyamar warned that continued violence risks reversing fragile gains made toward reconciliation and stability.
The state government has called on authorities in Greater Pibor to take immediate action, including holding perpetrators accountable.
It also urged the national government to intervene to address what it described as a “prevalent menace” affecting communities across the region.
“We strongly condemn these endless brutal acts of killing, cattle raiding, and abduction,” said Nyamar.
