Africa-Press – South-Sudan. More than 20 women in Western Bahr el Ghazal state on Wednesday completed a two-day United Nations training program on transformational leadership and peacebuilding in Wau, organizers said.
The workshop, organized by the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with Juba University’s Institute for Transformation Leadership, aimed to build skills for women leaders from Jur River and Wau counties.
A UNDP representative, Lucia Bassa, told Radio Tamazuj the training focused on transformational leadership, conflict analysis, peacebuilding and early warning systems.
“Participants were able in two days to understand developing their work plans within their community and also taking precautionary measures regarding abuses and advocacy,” Bassa said.
Participants included women from government ministries, faith-based groups, civil society and rural areas.
Angelina Anthony, one of the trainees, said the goal was to help women implement their leadership roles effectively.
“It is our responsibility to make something like mentorship so that other women become good leaders through the knowledge we gained,” Anthony said. She called on the UNDP to expand the training to other parts of the state.
Another participant, Laura Naro, said she gained valuable insights. “We have learned what we were looking for us women leaders in the state,” Naro said.
Randa Lawrence emphasized that leadership starts at home, and the training would change her approach in the community. She thanked the UNDP but suggested future sessions be longer to cover more material and include more women.
“We will reach out the information to other women out there,” Lawrence said, “and we hope there will be changes within our community.”
