Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Peace Building, Pia Philip, appealed to the youth in the country to embrace peace and unity.

Addressing the launch of the “Peace Begins with Me” campaign at St Mary’s College in Juba on Friday.

Pia said the youth in South Sudan have been misused by politicians to fight a war about which they do not know the root causes.

“We need to cultivate a culture of peace and forgiveness, and say no to violence in South Sudan.

“We need the refugees to come back home before the election, and that is why the government is planning to disseminate the peace agreement in the camps in order for the refugees to come home and enjoy relative peace,” Pia added.

He called on the people to be patriotic and not portray the country in a bad light, as he warned that such acts keep the refugees away from home.

The Chief of the Communication and Public Information Department at the UNMISS, Ben Dotsei, said the youth makes up the majority of the country’s population of about 70 percent who must not be ignored.

“The crucial discussions and actions regarding peace building in South Sudan. We are here to provide the youth with the chance not only to be heard but to be empowered,” he said.

He stressed the importance of informing youth about the peace process, the constitutional-making process, the election, and the roadmap.

“For us UNMISS, the Peace Begins with me campaign recognizes the potential power of the resilience of young people in this country and the role they could play to advance the peace process if they are given the chance.”
