Pochalla Hospital Faces Essential Drug Shortage

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The main medical referral facility in Greater Pochalla in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), Pochalla Hospital, is grappling with treating an alarming number of patients suffering from malaria amidst a severe shortage of life-saving drugs.

Amin Opiew, the county health director, told Radio Tamazuj that the drug shortage forces them to turn away patients.

“We recently received a consignment of life-saving drugs. However, due to a high malaria epidemic, there is a shortage of drugs, forcing us to ask our patients to get some malaria drugs from private clinics,” he reported. “Daily, we receive an average of 70 patients, a marked increase from 30 to 40 before May. This is outweighing our capacity.”

For her part, Mary Ajulu, a mother, said she had to get some drugs for her infants outside the hospital.

“This situation is difficult for those who cannot afford medicine at the pharmacies and shops, and we want drugs in the hospital,” she lamented.

Meanwhile, Pochalla South County Commissioner Otho Okoti Abic appealed for intervention from humanitarian agencies.

“During my assessment of the health facilities, it was evident that our people are suffering without treatment,” he said. “We appeal to our partners to fill this gap because we lack capacity.”
