Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Police of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State of South Sudan has launched a crackdown on criminal gangs who are reportedly terrorizing Aweil South County.
Luka Thel Thel, commissioner of Aweil South County, told Sudans Post on Friday that the operation followed complaints from the public about a group of youth breaking into houses and terrorizing the areas.
“We are going to send out the forces comprised of police, prison services, and civil defense and security forces across the county,” Luka said.
Luka stated that he has directed security forces to apprehend gangsters who are instilling fear in the community after one of them attacked a motorist and stole his belongings.
“The forces will not be doing their operation of crackdown on boys but will move in 9 payams, such as Wathmuok, Panthou, and Tiaraliet, for example, among others,” he said.
He said the local reports indicated that gangs are traversing areas at night, armed with weapons such as pangas, knives, and small firearms.
“Those who might be moving at night to the health centers, for example, and they are in civilian clothes will not be targeted, and we know these groups,” he said.
“They are well known through their dressing code and the carrying of weapons such as knives and pangas that they carry.”
The commissioner urged local civilians to stay calm as the operation commenced.
He urged the local residents to remain calm when they see soldiers patrolling at night, explaining that the purpose of the patrols is to enhance their safety.
He said the crackdown aimed at bringing back peace and order.
He encouraged parents to teach their children positive values and behaviors so they can grow up to be law-abiding citizens.
