Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan’s political leaders have formally confirmed the end of the transitional period and set their sights on holding national elections in December 2026.
The announcement followed an expanded meeting of the Presidency, during which Minister of Presidential Affairs Africano Monday presented a seven-point communique outlining key resolutions to guide the country toward credible elections.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Monday read out the resolutions, emphasizing the leadership’s commitment to finalizing preparations for the 2026 polls.
Seven-Point Agenda:
No Extension of Transitional Period – The Presidency resolved that the transitional period will not be extended beyond the current agreed timeline.
Constitutional Amendments – Certain provisions of the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan, 2011 (as amended), will be updated to establish the legal framework necessary for conducting the December 2026 general elections.
Committee Formation – A committee will be established to initiate the required constitutional amendments and present them to the leadership of the signatories to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), including RTGoNU, SPLM, IO, SOW, SPLM-FDS, and OPP. This committee will also address election-related matters and grievances through dialogue.
Completion of Transitional Security Arrangements – The Presidency directed the immediate completion of transitional security arrangements mandated under Chapter Two of the R-ARCSS.
Post-R-ARCSS Programs – Provisions of the R-ARCSS that cannot be completed prior to the national elections will be designated as post-R-ARCSS programs to be implemented by the next elected government.
Election Funding – The Minister of Finance and Planning was instructed to allocate and release funds and resources promptly to ensure the operationalization of the 2026 elections and all related activities.
Ongoing Oversight – The expanded meeting of the Presidency will remain actively engaged to monitor and ensure smooth preparations for the elections.
Minister Monday stated: The expanded meeting of the Presidency emphatically resolves that there shall be no further extension of our transitional period beyond the current agreed timeline. We unanimously agreed to amend certain provisions of the Transitional Constitution to establish the necessary legal framework for the conduct of the general election in December 2026.”
He added: “A committee will be established to initiate the required amendments and present them to the leadership of the parties — RTGoNU, SPLM, IO, SOW, SPLM-FDS, and OPP — to address election-related matters, including grievances, through dialogue.”
The announcement comes as the government moves to finalize the political and security arrangements required for credible elections, while also ensuring that pending tasks from the 2018 peace agreement are transitioned into post-election programs.
The Presidency’s seven-point agenda marks a significant step toward steering South Sudan toward its first national elections after the transitional period, reinforcing the leadership’s commitment to a peaceful, inclusive, and legally grounded electoral process.
