Africa-Press – South-Sudan. President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appealed to the communities in the country to maintain peace during the Easter period. The first family went ahead to send their warm greetings to Christians, observing Easter and added that this important event in the Christian calendar brings together families, friends, and neighbours to celebrate Christ’s victory over death.
“More importantly, his death is an ultimate expression of his love for us and a demonstration of his mercy and forgiveness of our sins. Additionally, Christ’s demise and his resurrection confirmed his victory over death and fulfilled God’s promise of life everlasting to his people,” said the Head of State.
“As you rejoice during this holiday, I am calling upon you to maintain peace and harmony within your communities. “I also invite you to join me in praying for peace, love, wisdom, and the resolution of the challenges we face as a country,” Kiir said.
‘‘May the spirit of the Lord guide our thoughts and actions during this Easter holiday,’’ he stated, as he wished all the people a pleasant Easter holiday with their families.
President Kiir’s message comes at a time when the country is grappling with conflicts that have turned bloody, leading to the loss of lives and several injuries.
There have been clashes between forces loyal to First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and those allied to Gen Simon Gatwech Dual in Magenis. The clashes, which began late last year and have remained on and off, have claimed several casualties.
The conflict between the host community and the cattle keepers in Magwi County led to the loss of lives, injuries, and displacements in late February.
The Governor of Eastern Equatoria, Lobong Lojore, said the conflict could trigger the biggest crisis if the national government failed to intervene urgently.
The Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, intervened and managed to restore peace in Magwi. Earlier this month, authorities in Unity State said at least 35 civilians have been killed in recent violence in Leer County.
Commissioner Stephen Taker Riak said the number could be far higher as many are still missing and pointed out that civilians were killed by gunmen during four days of vicious attacks in several villages in the area. The attack took place, a day after rival factions of the SPLA-IO fought at Mirmir Cantonment Site
