Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Former Sudan prime minister, Abdalla Hamdok said he met President Salva Kiir on the sidelines of the African Union summit to discuss the peace effort in his country.

Dr. Hamdok said in a social media post he held meeting with the South Sudan president in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Sunday.

He praised the “tireless efforts” of President Kiir through engaging local, regional and international parties in a bid to reach comprehensive peace in Sudan.

He also thanked South Sudan for opening its doors to Sudanese refugees.

“I extended my thanks and appreciation to His Excellency, President Salva Kiir for hosting South Sudan to large numbers of Sudanese who were displaced by the war and facilitating the procedures for their presence and movement.”

According to him, President Kiir stressed that he would spare no effort to bring peace to Sudan, citing a common destiny between the two countries, and pledged continued communication and thinking about how to accelerate efforts to stop the war in Sudan.

The ex -Prime Minister met with several African and international community representatives in Addis Ababa including the President of Kenya.

He briefed them on the latest developments regarding the war in Sudan and what he describes as catastrophic humanitarian situation threatening millions of Sudanese.

Hamdok called for African leaders to fulfil their historical responsibility to save the Sudanese people and prevent the disintegration of Sudan.

He urged the regional and international community to play a positive and effective role that contributes to ending the war in Sudan.

Hamdok resigned in January 2022 amid political deadlock and widespread protests following a military coup that derailed the country’s fragile transition to democracy.

He was forced to resign by powerful military commanders currently fighting for power, two years after President Omar al-Bashir was deposed and placed under arrest in Khartoum.
