Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudanese prominent activist and co-founder of People’s Coalition for Civil Actions (PCCA) Abraham Awolich has resigned from his position as managing director of Sudd Institute, an independent think tank research organization on Tuesday.
Awolich tendered his resignation to Prof. Pauline Riak, chair for Board of Directors of Sudd Institute on Tuesday the ground that his activism has been inconsistent with the vision of Sudd Institute of being an independent and non-partisan research institute.
“My current political activism is inconsistent with the vision of the Sudd Institute of being an independent, objective, and non-partisan policy research institution. It is best that I pursue the current path completely detached me from the Sudd Institute,” Awolish said in his resignation letter dated 23th November seen by Sudans Post.
Awolich resigned both from the position of managing director and the Sudd Institute entirely. “My thanks and appreciations to all the dedicated staff of Sudd Institute, for without them, I would not have accomplished anything. My only wish is that the Sudd Institute should continue to thrive doing and an objective and independent research,” he said.
He said that he doesn’t see the effectiveness in providing advice to a government that has become an enterprise of president Salva Kiir Mayardit whose end game is to protect and preserve his seat.
“I believe that South Sudan has ceased to have a representative government to take and consume policy advice. I, therefore, do not see the effectiveness of providing advice to a government that has become an enterprise of the president and whose end game is to protect and preserve the president’s seat, all at expense of citizens, democracy, and the rule of law,” he claimed.
He claimed that South Sudan has fallen at the hand of dictators, vowing to continue opposing Kiir’s dictatorship rule. “I am convinced without a shred of doubt that South Sudan has become another sad scene in the length of the episode of dictatorship in Africa and I am determined to oppose this dictatorship and authoritarianism with everything I have got,” he said.
“Achieving democracy and freedom, in my little understanding, an ending struggling that requires active citizenship and when necessary, standing up for what is right even when this means risking it all,” he added.
Awolich resignation came a few days after President Salva Kiir Mayardit ordered the reopening of the Juba-based think-tank, after being shut down by members of the country’s national security service in August.
The closure of the think tank institute came after Awolich and his colleagues under the umbrella group, the People’s Coalition for Civil Action issued a strong statement calling for a peaceful public uprising to seek political change in the country.
