The government has reiterated its commitment to implementing the revitalized peace agreement and called on the SPLM/SPLA-IO to stop fighting and respect the 2018 accord.
Minister of Information and government spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny made the remarks while speaking to journalists in Juba yesterday.
His call comes as tensions rise in several parts of the country due to military confrontations between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the SPLA-IO, along with allied White Army militias.
Speaking to the media, Ateny said the revitalized agreement remains the cornerstone for sustainable peace, security and stability in South Sudan.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully implement the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
“The government of the Republic of South Sudan reiterates its commitment to fully implement the revitalized agreement on the resolution of conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, the (R-ARCSS), as the cornerstones for sustainable peace, security and stability.
“In this regard, the government calls upon SPLM, SPLA in the opposition to immediately cease hostilities and strictly adhere to both the letter and spirit of the (R-ARCSS). Any action that undermines the agreement poses a serious threat to peace and jeopardizes the ongoing transitional process and stability in the country,” Ateny said on Tuesday.
The government also reassured residents of Akobo, Nyirol and Uror counties who sought refuge at UNMISS sites that security challenges are being addressed and their safety remains a priority.
“The government assures all residents of Akobo, Nyirol, and Uror counties who fled to United Nations Missions in South Sudan, who fleet to sites for safety, that conditions are all secure. And they are encouraged to avoid being caught up in a crossfire,” said Ateny, reiterating that “We also want to assure our UN partners, particularly the UNMISS, in particular, our full cooperation as they carry out their peace and humanitarian activities in the conflict-disturbed areas of Jonglei states.”
Minister Ateny’s remarks came amid reports of military confrontations in Eastern Equatoria, Central Equatoria and Jonglei states.
