Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The South Sudan National Basketball (SSNB) team captain, Kuany Ngor Kuany, has called upon fans to rally behind the team ahead of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Kigali.

The skipper, who spoke to The City Review, said preparations are in top gear while at the same time urging players to put their best foot forward to defend the flag.

“We know how important these upcoming games are. We are just taking it one day at a time, getting the most out of the training, “Kuang told City Review in an exclusive interview.”

He, however, called on South Sudanese, especially those in Kigali, to come out in large numbers and throw their weight behind the team.

“To the best fans in the world, it’s almost that time again! We need your cheers and support wherever you are. “You’re a big part of our team’s success and we wouldn’t be here without you all, so let’s get ready and bring all your energy. We are doing our best to get ready for these games and represent South Sudan. ” Rwanda will host the African qualifiers between July 1 and 2.

South Sudan’s Basketball Federation Deputy President, Mark Orem, said that the final list of players will be announced next week, adding that there will be stiff competition for those wishing to make it to the travelling squad.

About 20 players have been in training since June 21 in readiness for the regional championship divided into four groups.

South Sudan is in Group B alongside host Rwanda, Cameroon, and Tunisia.

The local boys will open their campaign against Rwanda and then take on Tunisia before winding up the group match with a duel against Cameroon.

The top three teams in each group will advance to the next round, which will leave 12 teams remaining.

Later, the 12 will be divided into two groups of six each.

Those teams will then play two games (home and away) at a single venue – the Kigali Arena.

After all the rounds, two top teams from each group will qualify for the World Cup next year.

South Sudan is seeking a maiden qualification to the World Cup and Orembe lives that dream is not far-fetched.

“The good thing is that each point we get now is carried forward to the next round.” At the end of the day, it is the points that count, so the more wins you have, the better.

“The boys just need to keep winning and accumulating points to keep their chances.”

Only five teams will qualify for next year’s World Cup, which will be played in Japan, the Philippines, and Malesia.
