Ruto says stability key to prosperity, pledges support for South Sudan elections

Kenyan President William Ruto has pledged Kenya’s commitment to supporting peace and security in South Sudan and the wider region, saying lasting stability is essential for regional prosperity.

President Ruto made the remarks after meeting a delegation led by South Sudan’s Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs, Tut Gatluak Manime, at State House in Nairobi yesterday.

Tut Gatluak delivered a special message from President Salva Kiir Mayardit to the Kenyan leader.

In a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, President Ruto said: “We are ready to support capacity building and institutional preparedness of South Sudan’s electoral agency ahead of the elections scheduled for later this year.”

According to President Ruto, Kenya is ready to support capacity building and institutional preparedness of South Sudan’s electoral bodies ahead of the general elections scheduled for later this year.

He said the support reflects a shared responsibility to strengthen democratic processes and ensure credible and peaceful elections.

The meeting was also attended by South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Monday Semaya Kumba, and Lazarus Sumbeiywo, the Chief Mediator of the Tumaini Initiative, a Kenyan-led peace process for South Sudan parties that stalled last year after talks were suspended.

The initiative had been widely viewed by many South Sudanese as a source of hope for reviving dialogue and restoring lasting peace in the country.
