Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Jonglei State’s Nyirol County has said that at least seven people were killed and four others left injured during a cattle raid in the area over the weekend.

The commissioner of Nyirol County James Bol Makuei explained that a group of suspected armed cattle raiders invaded Puokbor Boma of Thol Payam and launched an attack on Saturday.

“They went away with 1000 herds of cattle and the youth followed them immediately but it was difficult because they live in the forest, so the youth returned last night,” he said

Makuei said the cattle were seen heading towards the eastern sides of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

He expressed concerns that whenever such incidents happen, officials from Pibor either delay or fail to condemn them even if the penetrators crossed from their areas.

The Jonglei State Minister of Information John Samuel condemned the attacks and the loss of lives in Nyirol County. He said the officials have started engaging their counterparts in the neighbouring Greater Pibor Administrative Area in search of an amicable solution to the cattle raid in the region.

“We encourage the armed criminals suspected or believed to be from Greater Pibor Administrative Area to desist from attacking areas of Jonglei. This has been happening and within April there are more than 5 attacks were carried out by the Jonglei state.

“We call on our peace partners especially the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to see how best they can be able to talk to their youth to desist from such hostile activities,’’ he said.

The minister of information from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, Jay Adingora Alual, said he was not officially informed about the recent security incident in Nyirol County. However, he condemned the attacks saying the authorities in Greater Pibor Area were working to stop their young men from engaging in cattle raid activities.

“The government of Greater Pibor is working very hard to see that these criminal activities come to an end. And you know when you address such an issue you don’t expect to achieve it within a day or a month” Alual said.
