South Sudan advocates body calls for unity

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. JUBA- The Bar Association coalition of South Sudan has urged advocates all over the country to unite and acknowledge the ongoing internal power struggles in the country.

The call came as the alliance on Wednesday declared their candidates who will vie for the presidency and other vacancies within the South Sudan Bar Association.

In the past, the Bar Association has been having wrangles over leadership in the body.

Addressing reporters at the Judiciary headquarters in Juba, Stephen Wani, a member of the alliance declared Arop Malueth Manon as their candidate for presidency, Emmanuel Abraham Gandhi for the deputy presidency and Stephen Martin Nechar for the position of secretary general of the Bar Association

The declaration comes nearly a month after the Supreme Court dissolved the former Bar Association and gave a roadmap for the conduct of free and fair elections.

Wani said the group remains committed to their vision of establishing a stronger, unified, independent, efficient and professional Bar Association in South Sudan.

“We urge all advocates in the Republic of South Sudan to join our campaign to end the leadership dispute in the Bar Association to realize our aspirations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malueth cited division among lawyers as a setback to the legal profession.

“As lawyers, we have suffered a lot due to divisions in the Bar Association. We want to organize ourselves so that we reclaim our rightful place in society,” said Malueth.

He said the existence of the Bar Association is very important since it is provided in the constitution and by an Act enacted by Parliament and signed by the President of the Republic of South Sudan.
