Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA) which was formed in August this year with the aim of forcing President Salva Kiir Mayardit out of power has links with the country’s National Security Service (NSS) and the Jieng Council of Elders, a defector who withdrew from the group this week has claimed.
In a statement, the United Citizens for Change (UCC) led by Jongkor Mayol said it no longer has ties with the PCCA because of alleged links with President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s regime.
“The leadership of the United Citizens for Change, hereinafter referred to as the UCC, wishes to inform its grassroots and all its supporters that it has withdrawn from the joint coordinated activities program for popular uprising with the People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA), and other partners who signed the August 20th Communiqué,” the UCC said in the statement extended to Sudans Post.
“This means that the UCC has completely ceased participating in joint meetings and coordinated activities for popular uprising with immediate effect,” the statement added.
The statement said the group’s “leadership of the UCC has been taken aback for learning of existing links between some members of the PCCA with Jieng Council of Elders (JCE) and the National Security Service (NSS) in Juba.”
It said those links have “created concerns and, regrettably, we had not been able to resolve these concerns with the party involved.””This has meant persistent lack of transparency and unproductive endeavours in dialogue, despite efforts we made to resolve the issue.
“It is against these backdrops that the UCC decided to withdraw. The UCC leadership wishes to express its respect for the integrity demonstrated by Mr. Rajab Mohandis, a senior member of the PCCA, who publicly resigned his position in the civil society organisation he had worked for.
“Thus, delinking himself from it; while he engaged in the new endeavours for the regime change. We had hoped that a senior National Security Service officer, in the person of Mr. Joseph Akol Makeer, and the Head of the JCE Secretariat, Mr. Abraham Awolich, who has also served in Sudd Institute, would also submit their resignations to those two organisations to create enough space for building trust and confidence, but nothing of this kind has happened.
“We pay our tribute and respect to the patriotic son of South Sudan, Hon. Kuel Aguer Kuel, who though left in the dark dungeons of Juba government and posed like a pawn courageously endures the detention. “The UCC strongly believes that Hon. Kuel Aguer was left in the dungeons of the National Security Service in Juba. The UCC has made efforts towards his release and will continue to genuinely seek his release.
“We have recently seen President Salva Kiir increasing pressure and directing freezes against business allies associated to the Director General of Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Service in Juba, and this confirms our concerns.
“This of course, is the least in our concerns for it is an inner fight and a division in the regime against itself. But it affirms our concerns. Our main concern is that we cannot labour to replace President Salva Kiir with another younger Kiir who will cause the nation a huge price later to remove.
“We, in the UCC leadership remain firm in our political stance and we still believe in the possibility of achieving a drastic political change by all South Sudanese and for all South Sudanese; and we therefore, would like to reiterate our commitment for peaceful regime change.
“The UCC leadership remains politically open-minded and would still seek to form a Grand Political Coalition with the likeminded political organizations internally and externally for the regime change.
“We believe that the resignation of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, First Vice President, Riek Machar Teny, and the entire cabinet of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, and the Director General of the Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Service is an ensuring action for rebuilding the nation.
“Their failure to resign can only be met by popular uprising by the people of South Sudan until the values of justice and equality are realized for all South Sudanese.”
