South Sudan higher education minister says 2018 peace deal addresses past mistakes

Africa-PressSouth-Sudan. South Sudan Minister of Higher Education, Gabriel Changson Chang said the 2018 peace deal creates a new phase of transition that addresses the past mistakes and paves ways to achieve the democratic transformation in South Sudan.

“We hope this time around we will embrace democracy because with democracy, we can easily govern ourselves through peaceful transfer of power from one party to another,” Changson said on Friday after elections of South Sudan National Movement for Change in Juba.

“If there was no R-ACRSS of 2018, you won’t be conducting your convention today or maybe you won’t be here today. So, those are the dividends of peace and therefore, we must make sure that this peace agreement becomes sustainable so that the past would be forgotten,” Changson added.

He disclosed that democratic transformation will start as soon as the peace parties completed the implementation of chapter two of the peace deal. “As soon as we implement chapter two then the real democratic transformation will start and you will have another convention and other parties will do the same,” he said.

“At the level of South Sudan, we hope this time around we will embrace democracy because with democracy, we can easily govern ourselves through peaceful transfer of power from one party to another,” he added.
