Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) appealed to the people to use the World Cup football season to address the plight of children in the country.
The SSFA collaborated with the Kulang Foundation and UNICEF to organise football matches for children in Juba during the celebration of World Children’s Day on Saturday.
The day was marked under the theme “Inclusion for Every Child’.’
Around 12 teams of boys and girls from various Juba neighbourhoods participated in the festival. There was also an exhibition game between the children and the government officials.
Some of the activities included a WCD football tournament for children and young people with special guests. Others were juggling, playing tag, taking penalty shots, and making funny faces.
Speaking during the event, Gatwech Kulang, the chairman of the Kulang Foundation, appreciated the partners for participating in promoting children’s rights as well as progressing the theme of inclusion and diversity.
“Football is something special for many people, especially children in South Sudan. “The love of football is shared by people of all walks of life, ethnic groups, genders, and ages,” said Gatwech Kulang, the chairman of the Kulang Foundation.
“With the World Cup around the corner, it is time to get the whole world to come together as one to support children’s rights and break down the barriers that separate us,” Kulang added.
World Children’s Day is the largest advocacy event of the year for children and commemorates the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1989. The CRC was ratified by the government of South Sudan in 2015.
