Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Members of Parliament (MPs) from Eastern Equatoria State are calling on the governments of Kenya to immediately move its immigration offices from Nadapal to Lokichoggio.
The MPs also want Uganda to stop encroaching on South Sudan’s borders.
At the same time, the lawmakers called on EES residents to remain calm, adding that they would use all available mechanisms to address these thorny matters.
The MPs have accused Nairobi of border encroachment, adding that Kenya has created an additional county in South Sudan territory.
“There is an 11-kilometre A-1 road construction project in our territory up to Nakodok, creating a new sub-county in South Sudan soil,” read a joint statement signed by over 10 MPs.
The MPs further said that Kenya should immediately relocate Kibish Sub County, in the contentious Elemi Triangle.
They also want the government of South Sudan to not immediately revoke the temporary occupation agreement signed in 2009, which gave Kenya the mandate to jointly manage the Nadapal border point.
“The Kenyan government should revoke the establishment of Kibish sub-county and relocate it to Kenyan territory.
“The peace-loving people of South Sudan, and especially the indigenous people of Easter Equatoria State, are urged to stay calm, exercise maximum restraint and not to respond to any provocative threats by the government of Kenya.”
The lawmakers also want Juba to address the border issue with Uganda, especially in Magwi, Budi and Ikwoto counties.
They claimed that I Magwi, for example, the Ugandan army is carrying out illegal mining of minerals, extensions of roads, marking of physical boundaries, and drilling of boreholes.
They are also accused of plating sugar cane on large scale in the areas of Pogee, Mugali, Ngom Orom and Lobonne.
Uganda is also being accused of creating and operating a national wildlife reserve in Moyo Sukun. In Tseretenya, the MPs claim the Ugandan government has extended 10 km into South Sudan territory.
