South Sudan’s former central bank governor Othom Rago dies

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Othom Rago Ajak, the former governor of the central bank of South Sudan, died Wednesday in Cairo after a short illness, his family announced. He was 70.

His daughter, Buchay Ajak, confirmed the death. Arrangements are being made to repatriate his body to the South Sudanese capital, Juba, for burial, with arrival expected next week.

The Bank of South Sudan’s Board of Directors, management and staff expressed their “profound sorrow” at his passing.

“He was a dedicated public servant and economist whose contributions were instrumental in stabilizing South Sudan’s financial system,” the central bank said in a statement Thursday. “The Bank extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”

Ajak served as governor of the central bank from January 2017 to May 2018. His career in finance spanned more than four decades across Sudan and South Sudan.

Born in 1954 in Upper Nile State, Ajak earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Khartoum in 1980 and a master’s degree in economics from the American University in Cairo in 1993.

He played a pivotal role in establishing South Sudan’s financial structures after its independence. Prior to his governorship, he held several senior roles at the bank, including director general and assistant governor.

His commitment to public service extended beyond finance. He served as a clerk to the National Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2014 and held government positions in Fashoda and Upper Nile state.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren.
