South Sudan’s tie against Ethiopia ends goalless to extend team’s hope

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan can still dream of progressing to the next round of African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers after going goalless with Ethiopia in their first game.

Both Bright Stars and Ethiopian side failed to break the deadlock as the two opponents kept their defence tight and managed to contain each other’s threats.

The two will now have to wait for the next match, which will be played in the country on the 28th of this month, as South Sudan’s home game.

Any of them may move on to the next round of the CHAN qualifiers, therefore the competition remained fierce.

The team led by Coach Stefano Cusin must win at home to keep playing or risk losing the chance to advance through that level for the first time.

The winner of the match between South Sudan and Ethiopia will face Rwanda in the second round.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals are to be held in Algeria in January 2023.

South Sudan first participated in CHAN qualification matches in 2017, and after defeating Somalia in both home and away games, they moved on to the next round.

The team has never progressed past the competition’s preliminary phase. Her most recent performance was in the 2020 qualifying rounds, where she lost to Burundi in both legs and finished in the first round.

The next year’s competition will feature 18 teams instead of the previous 16 positions after the Confederation of African Football agreed to raise the number of competitors.
