Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), the main armed opposition group, has denied any association with a military general who recently announced his defection to the government forces.

Brigadier-General Samuel Machuol Kulang claimed on Sunday to be switching sides, leaving the SPLA-IO (which he joined in December 2022) for the ruling SPLM party and associated South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).

He stated his regret for joining the opposition and vowed never to defect again.

However, the SPLA-IO’s sector two in Unity State disputed Machuol’s claims.

Spokesman Major Yai Pazale told Sudans Post that Machuol had previously abandoned his deployment years ago and was not actively involved with the opposition.

He emphasized that any defection is acceptable, but intimidation tactics would not be tolerated.

“Anyone who chooses to leave the struggle is welcome, as it’s a long journey,” Pazale said. “However, we will not accept intimidation of our party or false accusations against the SPLA-IO.”

He clarified that Machuol defected alone, without any soldiers, and his departure has no impact on the movement.

“He made a decision he now regrets,” Pazale stated. “He came and left alone, and his choice has no bearing on the movement whatsoever.”
