A senior South Sudan opposition commander of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has been killed following an attack on opposition cantonment site in the country’s Central Equatoria state on Thursday evening by government forces, a senior opposition commander has told Sudans Post.

In an email, Brigadier General Okeny George Lam, the Commander of the SPLA-IO Anya-Nya Division in Central Equatoria, said Brigadier General Michael Mori Modi (better known as Mike-Mike) who was a senior officer of the Anya-Nya division was killed when government forces of Brigade two of the SSPDF Tiger Division attacked an area in Lokiliri Payam of Central Equatoria state.

“Today at around 4:50pm, Tiger forces of Brigade II under Tiger Division attacked the above SPLA-IO officer killing him instantly. The reason (s) behind this incident remained unknown. The attacked happened at his home in Kubi of Lokiliri Payam (Central Equatoria). Brigadier General Michael Mori Modi is an officer of Anya-Nya Division-Sector 09,” General George said.

The senior opposition official appealed to the acting SPLA-IO chief of staff Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam to “call for an independent investigation into this unfortunate incident.”
