Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition SPLM (IO) formed Juba University Students League leadership as part of the party’s effort to carry out mobilisation.
With over 300,000 students of voting age, the University of Juba remains a battleground for political parties as they push to recruit representatives through associations.
According to a press statement seen by The City Review, the SPLM (IO) National Students’ League General Secretariat on Thursday formed the SPLM (IO) Juba University Students’ League and elected Longar Majok as its chairperson to coordinate student activities.
The league also elected Margaret Yap as its deputy chairperson, and Andrew Okomos as its secretary-general.
According to the statement, the exercise was conducted fairly and it reflects the mission and vision of the SPLM-IO party.
“The SPLM (IO) upheld its democratic tenets and the guiding principles of fairness, transparency, freedom of expression, and a system of voting by secret ballot as stipulated by its constitution,” it partially noted.
According to the statement, the league will carry out student mobilisations and registration among others, with the hope of promoting the activities of SPLM-IO in the university.
Based on the agreement South Sudan is expected to conduct an election in 2024 according to the peace agreement and the Roadmap.
