SPLM-IO vow to win upcoming elections

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A senior member of South Sudan’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has vowed that the group will win the upcoming elections but said a candidate has not yet been identified to run against President Salva Kiir Mayardit saying a national convention of the group will be conducted ahead of the elections due for 2023.

According to the revitalized peace agreement signed by the SPLM-IO with the former Incumbent Transitional Government of National Unity (ITGONU) under President Salva Kiir Mayardit, elections shall take place at the end of the transitional period which is set to end in 2023, according to the revitalized peace agreement.

Speaking to Sudans Post on Tuesday from South Sudan’s capital Juba, Dut Majokdit, a senior member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition said Machar hasn’t yet been nominated to lead the party to the 2023 elections saying a party convention is expected to take place next year ahead of elections in 2023.

“We cannot declare H.E the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon now as the flag bearer, but convention will be conducted next year to the party to either endorse Dr. Machar to run against President Salva Kiir Mayardit in the elections or select another candidate, all these are to be decided in the convention,” he said.

The senior opposition official said there is no doubt that the SPLM-IO will win the elections “given the trust the people of South Sudan have in the people’s movement because it is the only organization that is capable of changing the current system under the leadership of the SPLM which has taken us to crisis.”
