Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) yesterday received a delegation from the SPLM National Secretariat in a bid to woo members to extend President Salva Kiir’s rule in the anticipated 2023 election.
The head of the delegation from the National Secretariat and a member of the National Liberation Council, Aldo Ajou Deng, called on the SPLM Cadres to work together to push forward the party’s agenda.
“Let us orient our party, organise it and unite it as one people. The unity of equal people,” Ajou said.
“We are coming here to support Emmanuel Adil. We hold our unity in diversity. Our diversity is not tribal. Something is wrong with South Sudan, everyone wants to be anything.”
The SPLM Secretary-General in Central Equatoria State, Anna Kaku Samson, said the party is ready for the 2023 polls.
On behalf of the SPLM Secretariat, Central Equatoria State, I want to say when we are united,” Kaku said.
Speaking at the same event, Governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony, said they are ready to push forward the SPLM agenda, saying they are for the unity of the party.
He hailed the delegates from the SPLM National Secretariat and all the SPLM members in the state for their participation in the launch of the SPLM renaissance.
Kiir endorsed
Since the year began, the SPLM had been carrying out several rallies in the state, mobilising the people to rally behind President Salva Kiir ahead of the 2023 General elections.
While in Eastern Equatoria State in January, the SPLM Interim Secretary-General, Peter Lam Both, revealed that elections must take place as the government was prepared to use the 2008 census in case they run out of time to conduct a new census.
However, some of the major prerequisites for the planned election include population census, constitutional amendment, election act, security act, graduation of the unified forces and the political parties act as well as the dignified repatriation of refugees from the neighbouring countries.
The SPLM Renaissance initiative, which began yesterday, will continue until May 16, 2022, and will stretch to Terekeka County from the capital city.
“The SPLM Renaissance initiative is running from 9th till 16th May 2022 with already planned public rallies in Juba and Terekeka counties aimed at popularising the ruling party agenda mission ahead of the 2023 General Elections,” the statement read in part.
Opposition reluctant
Parties have lately stepped up their activity with the focus being on recruitment of new members and activation of new offices. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition on Saturday launched its headquarters in Unity State’s capital Bentiu.
The Director for Information and Public Relations, Puok Both Baluang, said they were far from a plan of mobilising the people for elections saying the poll is the last item in the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
“Election is the endpoint of the agreement and this was not a rally. It was preparing our grassroots and trying to set up our foundation as a political party,” he said.
This is just a start and a foundation, and people have turned up in huge numbers, celebrating the presence of the SPLM/SPLA-IO in Unity State and other states as well.”
However, he noted that their movement was transitioning into a political party as soon as the unified forces graduated, and the political parties act passed for them to register as a political party.
