Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement is set to dispatch members of the national secretariat to the states for reorganisations, a move that seems to be a preparation for the general elections.

The decision was made during a meeting on Thursday between the deputy chairman of the party, Wani Igga, and the party’s acting secretary-general, Peter Lam. Speaking to the media after the closed-door meeting, Lam said all plans have been made to recognise SPLM in the states.

“The meeting we had related to the budget we have here at the SPLM House on the 10th of January and a scheduled meeting with the caucus of the Council of States which is scheduled for Saturday the 15th of January,” he said.

“We have also discussed several issues related to the mission of the national secretariat to the states, which is scheduled to take place on or about January 20th. We will visit some areas and states to take the message of SPLM to ensure that there is a reorganisation of the party taking place,” Lam said.

Igga, the SPLM deputy chairperson, worked at the SPLM house on Thursday to coordinate the plans and activities of the members at the SPLM national secretariat.

Last year, the SPLM party began the recruitment of new members across the state. The move was considered groundwork in preparation for the forthcoming election in 2023, which will mark the end of the transitional period.

The newly appointed SPLM County Secretaries in Lakes State were sworn in this week and given the duty of appointing secretaries in the payams and bomas in compliance with the party structure to foster the agenda of the party.

The deputy speaker of the state parliament, who is also a member of the SPLM State caucus, Ayeen Meen Ador, said the county secretaries must recruit new members to the party.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the new county secretaries in Lakes State. “I know they will work very hard to recruit members of the SPLM, maintain current members and work with them for success in the coming elections in 2023,” said Meen.

More defections

In November 2021, however, around 300 supporters of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) joined the SPLM party in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State.

Confirming the defection of the SPLM/A-IO, Governor Tong Ngor Akeen, who also serves as the SPLM chairperson in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, said the SPLM was ready to gather additional followers in preparation for the general election. He said the SPLM must begin a massive recruitment drive in the state for the party to win the general election in 2023.
