Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) announced the reception of two prominent politicians, Prof. Mourwel Ater and Mr Andrew Ayom, to boost its ranks.

The party’s secretary-general Peter Lam told The City Review that Ayom had joined them from the National Democratic Movement party led by Dr Lam Akol, while Prof Muorwel was a returning former member of SPLM who initially left due to his reasons.

“In his declaration statement, Prof. Muorwel said he left “the SPLM after developing some concerns like others”, but he didn’t say which party he joined. For us, it is not important that he didn’t name his party. What is important is that he realised his mistakes, repented and returned to the mother party, the SPLM,” Lam said.

According to Lam, both officials joined the SPLM formerly at an event held at SPLM House on Saturday.

“Prior to that Hon. Andrew Ayom was a member of the then SPLM DC at the same time that Dr. Lam Akol was a chiefwhip of the party in the National Assembly in Juba prior to the signing of the peace agreement in 2015,” Lam said.

Lam further opined that any member who joins or returns to the party is given one-year probation period and subjected to the training before being granted full membership.

“SPLM does not admit anyone to the party on condition that they will be assigned a position,” he added.

Prof Muorwel is a poet and a writer who authored many books including Dinka poems while staying in Australia and Sudan in the latest years.

In April 2024, he returned to the country where he was escorted with a warm reception at Juba International Airport after spending 40 years in abroad.

Speaking at the Juba Airport in April during his arrival, Muorwel said the he came to the country to see the heroes who liberated the country.

According to him, he was part of the liberation struggle and that he did not make it to come back since independence and that he feels excited to see the country and progress in the capital city.

“I have seen a lot of progress. I came to visit my family, friends and visit the county itself,” he said.
