Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The state media will provide live coverage of the court proceedings involving Dr. Riek Machar Teny and seven other senior members of the SPLM-IO as the trial opens today at Freedom Hall in Juba, according to a government-affiliated journalist and senior broadcaster.

On Friday, Kur Lual Kur, one of the lead defense lawyers for Dr Machar and other accused, said the government informed his team that legal proceedings will begin at 9:00 AM on Monday, September 22, in a special court in Juba.

According to the indictment, Dr Machar and his co-accused face charges including murder, treason, conspiracy, financing terrorist acts, acts against state authorities, and crimes against humanity.

The charges relate to deadly clashes in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, in March, which left an SSPDF general and hundreds of soldiers dead.

Kur said he met with Dr Machar and the other clients three times this week and described them as being in good health and prepared for the proceedings.

In a Facebook post on Sunday evening, Gore Anthony confirmed that the state broadcaster will air the trial live beginning in the morning hours, citing the high level of public and international interest in the case.

“SSBC would be broadcasting live coverage of this event in the morning hours. This is since the nature of the case is not only a matter of National and Regional but also International concern,” he wrote.

Dr. Machar, the former First Vice President of South Sudan, is standing trial alongside seven other top SPLM-IO military and political leaders.

In his post, Anthony has tagged countries such as Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia for the broadcast reach.
